Pvt Carl W. Derr graduated from Tremont High School in 1943 and was the author of a weekly column published by his local newspaper.

He enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 28 June 1943 and was assigned to the Medical Corps at Camp Reynolds, Pennsylvania. Later he underwent advanced training at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C.
