T/5 John W. Flath graduated from the Escanaba High School in 1939He enlisted in Marquette, Michigan on 6 August 1942.
He was married to Louellla Larson at Camp Wolters on 31 October 1942.
T/5 Flath was sent overseas on 30 May 1944.
In a letter, dated 23 March 1945, the day before he was killed, he reported that he had been promoted from corporal to staff sergeant and was soon to be replaced on the front for return to a rest camp.
