More information

2nd Lt Everett L. Hess enlisted in New York City, New York on 20 March 1943.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal postumously. The citation reads: "For gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States, 25 March 1945, Gross-Auheim, Germany. At approximately 0500, the enemy attacked and was able to penetrate the left flank of the battalion enabling them to get in the rear of and in houses in Lt Hess' positions. Lt Hess personally braved the close range enemy fire to report to company headquarters and report the situation. He then returned to his platoon and visited each of his squads, and set up strong points in the houses that they occupied. In traveling from one squad to another he was subjected to enemy rifle and machine gun fire. Lt Hess was so organized and inspired, his men by his courageous actions that not one squad withdrew from their precarious positions. Lt Hess' actions reflect great credit and the armed forces of the United States."
