Capt Robert R. Volz graduated from Roger Bacon High School and the University of Cincinnati.

He enlisted at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on 3 April 1941.

In a period in July 1944, when his battalion was in a defensive position at Raids, France, Capt Volz, with his line crew, braved enemy fire to repair vital communication wires between the companies and the battalion command post. for this action he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He planned to get married to Lt. Marion Campbell in England who was an Army nurse in Belgium. A few days before he was killed, he had sent a check to his brother-in-law, asking him to buy a lot in Mount Healthy so they could build a house after the war.

His sister Claire was a U.S. Marine corporal and Gertrude a WAC sergeant.
