More information
S/Sgt Herbert A. Chase enlisted in New York City, New York on 13 July 1942.Statement from S/Sgt Gilbert G. Debrinksi:
"Information concerning the left waist gunner Herbert A. Chase. After reaching the ground, I met the ball turret gunner, Joe Anderson by name. We were both wounded and in no condition to walk any distance. We were approximitly 30 miles from Switzerland. The town of which I have any knowledge is Memingen Germany. At which place I was hospitalized. The stalag number is 7B. Prior to our reaching this stalag we were taken prisoner about 10 Kil. from there. We were taken from the mountains after our capture to a small town. We were then placed in the ambulance where they already had Herbert A. Chase. He was on the bottom stretcher. He had on all his gear and equipment. He was in great pain. I did not see them do anything to relieve him or make him comfortable. I tried to give him my morphine but they refused to let me do anything for him. The three of us were then taken to a sort of dispencery which I believe was for the German soldiers. They let Herb ly in that condition for a period of time so as for him to lose enough blood so as to die. He died at this station. It was the last time he was seen alive by myself and Joe Anderson. I, myself and I believe Joe anderson will swear that his death was caused by the negligence on the part of the personel of that garrison. I assumed that he was buried in or near that vicinity."
He was first buried at the City Cemetery Kaufsbeuren, Allgäu, Germany.
