More information

1st Lt Lloyd S. Handskemager entered the service in December 1941 and went overseas in April 1944.

He was married to Violet E. Seablom on 11 August 1942.

His B-17 was hit by flak and left the formation after bombing but rapidly lost altitude with two engines out. He decided to fly to Switzerland at 18,000 feet, however, the situation on board grew worse so the crew bailed except for the two pilots. They had no opportunity to bale out and attempted to make an emergency landing in which the aircraft broke up and caught fire. This was on the eastern slope of Kliene Waxenstein near Grenau about one mile Sw of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. 2 KIA 8 POW. Note: His body was burnt to a cinder, practically nothing was found.
