1st Lt Edward Handorf graduated from Withrow High School, attended college and was an accountant.

He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army as a private in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 3 July 1941. He graduated from the Army Air Forces School at Hendricks Field, Florida, as Flying Fortress pilot in September 1943.

An Me 109 came in at 1 o'clock low and sprayed the front of the aircraft with 20mm shells, hitting the wing tanks. The right wing and tanks began to burn.

Two crew members were taken prisoner, eight were killed.
