2nd Lt Ellie R. Nesmith was a salesman for the Mason Lumber Company in Jacksonville, Florida.

He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve at Cochran Field, Macon, Georgia on 25 August 1942.

The airplane was hit by enemy fighters over the target area. The #2 engine and nose was hit by 20 mm. It peeled out of formation, lost altitude, went into a vertical dive, and exploded. Three parachutes were seen.

Six crewmembers were taken prisoner, four were killed. They were initially buried at the city cemetery of Torgau on 1 June 1944.
