2nd Lt William R. Thorpe Jr. graduated from Classical High School in 1938. He attended college for two years and was a salesman at Congdon And Carpenter Company.

He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Providence, Rhode Island on 5 August 1942.

Their aircraft was shot down by German fighters near Haselünne. The entire crew was killed. They were initially buried at the cemetery of Quakenbruck, Germany.
