T/4 Howard W. Durey worked on the family farm and later as a driver.He enlisted on 13 February 1941 at Fort des Moines, Iowa.
He was married to Ora Simon on 29 June 1942.
In December, 1942, he landed in Algiers and saw action throughout the campaign in North Africa. After the African campaign he took part in the Sicilian invasion where he contracted fever and was returned to Africa for hospitalization, remaining there for two months. After returning to his unit, he was transferred to England to prepare for the invasion.
