More information

Col Mansfield graduated from Military Academie in 1938. His first station after graduation was Brooks Field, Texas. From 1929 until 1931, he served in the Second Cavalry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. The summer of 1929 he became a member of the Cavalry Rifle Team and fired both rifle and pistol at Camp Perry in the National Rifle Matches and National Matches.

He was killed while on a personal reconnaissance. An hour before the reconnaissance he had been awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action on 6 and 7 January 1945. According to Maj Gen Collier, Mansfield left his CP with one of his tank company commanders to size up his objective for the next day. There was deep snow on the ground. Evidently they were observed and killed by a direct hit of an 88 MM shell from a Mark V tank. When they were reached by medics, the Silver Star was still pinned to Mansfield´s field jacket.
