More information
Plane 43-37834, flown by Lt Fred J. Lockwood, was hit by fighters just moments after turning on the IP. Details of what exactly happened to these planes on this attack are scarce. The attack lasted 13 minutes. There were about 50 ME-109s and FW-190s that hit from below at six and nine o'clock. The damage was done by 30 mm shells and this plane, along with four others in the Squadron, left the formation and crashed in Germany. Two of the crew were killed, the rest became POWs.Joe was listed MIA until the war was over. At that point records of his burial by the Germans were obtained, and his remains were interred at Margraten cemetery, the Netherlands. His name is inscribed on page 214 of the Roll of Honour maintained at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England.
