S/Sgt Cyrus J. Peppers Jr. attended Girard High School before he enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 3 September 1943.Twenty-five to fifty Me-109s and FW-190s attacked the group just before the initial point of the bombing run.
The airplane exploded in the air and burned after the crash. One crew member survived and was taken prisoner, eight men were killed.
S/Sgt Peppers didn’t bail out.
He is remembered at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.
