S/Sgt Robert J. Mullins graduated from Gloversville High School in June 1941 and worked as a bank teller before he enlisted in Utica, New York on 26 December 1942. He was transferred to the Army Air Corps in January 1943.

The airplane was hit by flak over France and had to leave the formation. The pilot salvoed the bombs but was still not able to rejoin the formation and was attacked and shot down by fighter aircraft over Mont-Saint-Martin, France. Seven of his crew were killed, one evaded and two were taken prisoner.

S/Sgt Mullins was still in the plane when it hit the ground.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Champigneul, France.

He is remembered at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville, Fulton County, New York.
