More information
2nd Lt Arthur H. Lindskoog was a brakeman at the New York Central Railroad before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Albany, New York on 2 September 1942.The airplane was by flak which knocked out two engines and the bombs were salved. Two U.S. fighters escorted the aircraft as far as the mountains of Switzerland. the aircraft was losing altitude and was flying lower than some of the peaks and flew in and out of snow squalls. The pilot ran the bailout bell and four crew members did so at 1430hrs near Partenen, Austria. After these men had bailed out, the weather cleared and the pilot thought he could make it, but within minutes a third engine stopped and the rest of the crew prepared to bail out. Both Lt Lindskoog and Sgt Finneran bailed out but seconds later the aircraft crashed on the Kesslerbrug in the Schlappen Valley, nine miles north of Davos, Switzerland.
Four men were killed. They were initially buried at the cemetery of Münsingen in Bern in a special plot for American casulaties.
Four men were taken prisoner and one was interred in Switzerland.
Lt Lindskoog bailed out but his parachute failed to open.
