Charles Irwin graduated from Farragut Hhigh School in 1939 and was entering his third year at the School of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee when he volunteered for the Army of the United States at Camp Forrest, Tennessee.

The aircraft was attacked by fighters near Bonn after the bomb run, starting a fire in the cockpit area.

Four crew members were taken prisoner, six men were killed. For were initially buried in a common grave at the cemetery of Grossvernich, Germany on 16 August 1943.
