Robert W. Jones graduated from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in 1941 with a degree in General Engineering. He followed the ROTC program.

The airplane was hit by enemy flak and exploded in the air.

Three crew members were taken prisoner, seven men were killed.

Lt Jones was initially buried at the cemetery for foreign soldiers in Dülmen on 23 February 1944.
