Pfc Lloyd R. Smith graduated from Millburn High School before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 1 December 1942. He was initially assigned to a medical unit but later volunteered for the paratroop service.Pfc Smith was the second son in the family to give his life for his country. His brother, Sgt. Harold W. Smith of the Marine Corps, and a former local police officer, was killed in New Georgia Island in the Pacific Theater on 10 July 1944.
