More information

Sgt Bennie E. Castleman graduated from Hallsville High School.

He distinguished himself on the battlefield and was promoted in the fields from the rank of private to that of sergeant for bravery and marksmanship. The special occasion which won his promotion was when he concealed himself in a hedgerow and single handedly wiped out a group of Germans who were preparing to make a surprise attack on US troops.

Sgt Castleman was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Grand Failly, France.
