More information

His mother died soon after his birth so he made his home with a grandmother in the town of Arpin until he was seven, then went to live on his grandfather´s farm near Vesper.

Edmund Sternot attended Lincoln High School and was employed by the Consolidated Water Power and Paper Company.

He received training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before going overseas in September 1943.

Sgt Sternot took part in the D-day invasion of France and also participated in the Operation Market-Garden.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal postumously for actions, a few days before he was killed. He rushed his machine gunners to move in front of a surprise German breakthrough. Sternot's isolated men held their icy ground in a Belgian forest, despite the fierce German attack that included tank rounds. Military documents show 60 German gunners lay dead in front of Sternot's machine gun station.
S/Sgt Sternot died just days after this brave action, during yet another German counterattack, when he was hit by a tank round.

He was initially buried at the temporary american Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
