Pfc John M. Simon Jr. was a flower grower when he joined the National Guard in Baltimore, Maryland on 3 February 1941.He travelled extensively with the Army Show and was assigned as an instructor before joining a glider unit. He was sent overseas in September 1943 and was reported wounded in action in June 1944 but returned to his unit. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for the first time.
