Pvt Philip L. Beard enlisted in Clarksburg, West Virginia on 1 december 1943.

He worked in manufacture of textiles before he enlisted.

On 3 January 1945 the 2nd Battalion was engaged in heavy fighting around Longchamps, Belgium. The Germans pressed forward and as many as forty jumpers, mostly from F company were rounded up and taken prisoner that day.

Pvt Beard is remembered at the Cemetery in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

He was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Grand Failly, France.
