2nd Lt Napoleon T. Lavallee joined the Regular Army on 5 August 1939 and served for three and a half years in Panama. Upon return to the U.S. he served at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and later attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was commissioned a second lieutenant on 26 February 1943.

He was sent overseas in February 1944. During his 11 months service overseas, Lt Lavallee was wounded in action three times, for which he received the Purple Heart Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was also awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action.

Lt Lavallee served with the pathfinders and was one of the first paratroopers to land in France on D-Day. He landed a few minutes after 12.00 A.M. with 26 men.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Grand Failly, France.
