S/Sgt James R Hickey worked in an aircraft factory.

He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in New York City, New York on 28 November 1942.

The aircraft was shot down by flak. The entire crew of nine men was killed. Six men were initially buried at a temporary military cemetery at Haamstede as unknown. Only Sgt. Galbraith could be identified. The remains of Lt. Sample and Sgt. Sandberg were discovered in April 1947 during a mine clearing operation. The wreckage was recovered in 1973.

His brother-in-law, Pfc Charles J. Hajek, is buried at Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial.
