S/Sgt Gutowsky attended Washington Park high school and was employed in the office of the Peerless Machine company when he joined the air forces September 14. 1942. He trained at Tyndall field in Florida and had been overseas since May. Joe Gutowsky was promoted to Staff Sergeant while stationed in England.

Ship 940 was jumped by fighters after bombs away and started going down. Four chutes were observed. Plane was not on fire and seemed under control.
