T/Sgt Tinklepaugh joined the Regular Army on 18 September 1939, and was trained at Langley Field, Chanute Field, Scott Field and Tyndall Field prior to embarking for overseas in April 1943. He was a graduate of Exeter High School, class of 1938. He was a well know resident of the Pittston area. He was a member of the Congregational Church of West Pittston.

Statement of 1st Lt Glenn E. Jorgensen:
"I saw Lt. Swanson's plane 41-29130 get hit by fighters. Flames could be seen in the bomb bay. He turned and left formation. I turned and left a few minutes later and saw a plane that had crashed, burning on the ground."

Five crew members survived and were taken prisoner. Five were killed and initially buried at the church cemetery of Holtrup.
