Sgt Donald D. Shumate was a retail manager before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Little Rock, Arkansas on 13 October 1942.

The airplane was hit by flak in bomb bay, exploded and crashed near Wörth am Rhein, Germany.

He is remembered at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Quitman, Faulkner County, Arkansas.
