T/5 Gay Mitchell Jr. had been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster, representing an additional award of the same kind, for "heroic achievement in action against the enemy in Germany".Under enemy and artillery and mortar fire, T/5 Mitchell went to the aid of a wounded comrade, rescued him, placed him under cover and the assisted medical men to bandage his wounds.
The citation further said: "The outstanding and determined devotion to duty displayed by T/5 Gay Mitchell Jr., was an inspiration to the men with whom he served; and his actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces".
T/5 Gay Mitchell Jr. is remembered at the Meadville Cemetery in Meadville, Linn County, Missouri.
