More information
1st Lt Floyd M. Vevle attended college. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve as a private in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 4 November 1942.
The aircraft was lost during intense fighter attacks by approximately 100 FW 190s and ME 109s at about 1240 hours. Due to the fact that the entire squadron was lost during these encounters, there are no particulars available on the attack and subsequent loss of this aircraft.
Statement of the Top Turret Gunner, T/Sgt Mario Manfredini: "Plane was hit by fighters and set afire. Lt Vevle was right behind me when I jumped, but I don't know for certain if he did follow me out. The Germans told the Navigator that he was found dead in the wrecked plane."
1st Lt. Vevle was initially buried at the community cemetery of Wachow on 16 January 1945. During the disinterment of American casualties at this cemetery, his remains were never found.
His twin brother Lloyd is buried at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial of Ardennes in Belgium.
Both brothers are remembered with an inscription on the grave of their parents at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
