Sgt Charles H. E. Alter Jr. attended Benjamin Franklin High School and was employed by Hart's Food Stores Inc. before he enlisted in Rochester, New York on 20 April 1943.He was reported wounded in action in France on 8 November 1944 for which he received a first Purple Heart Medal.
He was killed by small arms fire in the abdomen.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium on 7 February 1945. He was disinterred on 2 September 1948 and given his final resting place at Henri-Chapelle on 28 October 1948.
