Pfc John E. Cooper was a shoemaker and shoe repairman before he joined the National Guard in Emporia, Kansas on 23 December 1940. He was sent overseas in May 1944.

Pfc Cooper was killed when an artillery shell struck a tree and exploded, right above his foxhole.
