Pfc Foster S. Smith attended high school for three years and was an electrician before he joined the National Guard in Jefferson, Missouri on 23 December, 1940.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
