Leland Walzel was a driller.

He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in San Antonio, Texas on 6 April 1942.

The airplane was shot down by flak over the target. Seven crew members were killed, three men survived and were taken prisoner.

Lt Walzel was killed on his 25th mission, which would have completed his tour.
