Sgt James De Toris was a stenographer and typist before he joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army at Camp Upton, New York on 4 October 1941.

The aircraft was attacked on the way to the target by a German fighter near Dunkirk and took direct hits in #4 engine and the bomb bay.

He was initially buried at the cemetery of Lille in a section reserved for British soldiers on 13 October 1942. He was disinterred on 15 September 1945 and his remains were reburied in a temporary grave at Margraten on 20 September 1945. After being disinterred a second time on 11 October 1948, he was given his final resting place on 2 February 1949.
