1st Lt John F. Sykes enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July 1941.

While at Gettysburg Lt Sykes was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He left college at the end of his junior year in order to enlist.

He was reported missing in a plane explosion over France before he was officially decleared as dead by the War Department.
