2nd Lt James E. Pierce enlisted in April 1942. He was sent overseas in July 1943.

B-17 #42-39860 and #42-30717 collided in the air. The tail section of #42-39860 was knocked off and six feet of the left wing of #42-30717, causing it to go down in a tight spin from an altitude of 20,000 feet.

Six crew members were taken prisoner, and four men were killed.
