More information

S/Sgt William D. Turner graduated from Springfield High School and worked for Boeing.

He enlisted in Tacoma, Washington on 23 September 1943 and was sent overseas in January 1944.

Statement from F/O James P. Hyland Jr., Navigator:
The aircraft is believed to have gone down during an attack by enemy action. When I hit the ground I could see smoke from a burning plane about a half a mile from where I landed. The Germans brought some burning G.I. shoes up to where I was at. I don´t know if they were from our plane or not. This small town was about ten miles south-east of Werl, Germany. Later at the airfield at Werl, a German Major showed me some American dogtags and asked me if I knew the owner, saying it was too bad as he was killed. I saw the tag plainly, William D. Turner names, his mothers address as Springfield, Oregon. About Lt Wall and Lt Abel, I did not know for eight months that they were missing, until I received mail from the States."
