More information

Pfc Lawrence L. White, Jr. was part of Taskforce Baum who made a daring action into enemy territory to liberate Allied prisoners held by the Germans in the POW Camp Oflag XIII-B near Hammelburg, Germany. The action was on orders of General Patton himself, because his son in law was held in the camp.

He was taken prisoner and died in German captivity..

Pfc White's Silver Star citation reads: "...for gallantry in action against an armored enemy of the United States, 28 March 1945, Hammelburg, Germany. When an overwhelming number of enemy tanks attacked their task force, the assault gun tank of which Private First Class White was assistant gunner moved into an exposed position from which it could lay smoke and blind the attacking armor most effectively. While so exposed, the assault gun tank received a direct hit which wounded Private First Class White. He nevertheless continued firing until a second enemy round wounded him so seriously that he could no longer continue in the fight. Private First Class White's actions reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States."
