More information

T/4 Edwin H. Carlson was part of "Task Force Baum" during the "The Hammelburg Raid". The raid was the personal plan of General Patton to liberate his son-in-law from the POW camp in Hammelburg.

In June 1945, the remains of T/4 Carlson were discovered in an isolated grave near Höllrich. His remains were evacuated to Margraten and marked as Unknown X-784 because identification tags to determine his identity were unavailable. Thanks to the fact that the grave was marked with his name and date of death and the presence of disabled vehicles of his unit in the vicinity and a laundry mark on his clothing, it was believed that the remains belonged to T/4 Carlson.

He was initially buried in a temporary grave at Margraten on 22 May 1945. After being disinterred and after the cemetery was given a permanent status, he was given his final resting place in March 1949.
