Albert Valentinelli's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Deromedi, raised him and his siblings. Because of this, Albert was known as "Deromedi". He attended Mount Carmel Township schools until 1930 at which time he joined the Regular Army at the age of 17. He served in China, Hawaii, and was stationed in Panama when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. He returned to the States to begin Officers' Training School, graduating in 1942.

He volunteered for the paratroopers in June 1944.

Albert Valentinelli was wounded in action in the Netherlands for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
