The airplane was hit by flak and was on fire. Soon after the order bail out was given, it went into a spin. It is believed that 2nd Lt John J. Garland didn't leave the airplane. As it went into a spin he was forced to the floor unable to arise. He was in his position and not able to reach an escape hatch.Five crew members survived and ware taken prisoner, five men were killed.
