Richard Mowrer attended Audubon High School in Audubon, New Jersey.

He enlisted on 4 August 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

About 40 miles west of the target the pilot pulled his plane out of formation and dropped its wheels. The plane had two engines feathered because of mechanical problems and had its controls shot out in a pass by German fighters.

Six crew members survived ans were taken prisoner, four men were killed. They were first buried at the Dutch Reformed Churchyard of St. Nicolaasga.
