He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Charlotte, North Carolina on 13 March 1942.

Over the Frisian Islands the airplane was hit by flak, which took of the vertical stabiliser.

Seven crew members survived and were taken prisoner, three were killed.
