Erskine Dollarhide graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1935 and a former manager of the Mayfair theater in Asbury Park.

He was offered an appointment to West Point in 1939 but was unable to accept. He did accept a commission in the infantry and a year later was called into active service. In 1941 he transferred to the Air Corps.

Capt Dollarhide had a seven-month-old daughter, Nancy.

The airplane was hit by flak and attacked by enemy fighters near the Initial Point. It left the formation due to damage. Some of the crew members bailed out at that time. Shortly thereafter, the airplane went out of control.

Four crew members were tkan prisoner, six men were killed.
