William Johnston graduated from Blytheville High School in 1938 andr attended Lambert College for three and a half years before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in December 1941.


The airplane was shot down by Uffz Gerd Wiegand of 8./JG 26 in an Fw 190.

Lt Johnston was killed during the second attack of the enemy fighter by gunfire while he was fighting a fire.

Six crew members were taken prisoner, four men were killed. They were initally buried at the community cemetery of Eupen, Belgium.
