S/Sgt Frederick W. Zumpf graduated from Washington high School and worked as a sales clerk and pin boy at the local bowling alley.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Hartford, Connecticut in May 1942. He first served with the infantry and was later transferred to the Air Corps.

The airplane was hit by rockets, fired from a Ju-88 in the vicinity of Hasselt, Belgium.

Four crew members survived and were taken prisoner, six men were killed.
