He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Sacramento, California on 2 March 1942.

The airplane was last seen 10 kilometres west of Texel Island over the North Sea when it dropped out of formation with its wheels down. It appeared to be under control when last seen.

All ten crew members were killed. Only the body of the bombarbier, 1st Lt John W. Hull, washed ashore on Terschelling Island, The Netherlands on 13 February 1944.

His brother Robert L. Hull was killed on 4 January 1944 and is also buried at Margraten. They are both remembered at the Dunsmuir City Cemetery in Dunsmuir, California.

Their other brother Marion Hull was training to become a navigator when the war in Europe ended. He wasn't sent to the Pacific due to the loss of his two brothers.
