Louis' father, Morris Ungar was a tailor and wanted a good life for his family and he decided to bring the family to America. They boarded the ship Caronia and sailed to the port in New York, arriving on 26 August 1922. They settled in the Bronx area of New York City, New York. He found work in the garment district of New York which is where he felt comfortable.

Louis Unger was a compositor and typesetter with the Al Levine Print Company.

He enlisted on 22 December 1943.

He is buried next to his brother Joseph. Also their brother David served during the war.

Note the different spellings of their surname.
