Fred H. Martin attended high school for 1 year and was a clerk before he enlisted.

1st Lt Fred H. Martin enlisted at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 5 February 1942. He served at Camp Bowie, Brownwood, Texas and was at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana when selected for officer training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After graduation he was sent to Fort McClellan, Alabama and then to Camp Shelby in June 1943. He left Camp Shelby in May 1944 for overseas service, being sent first to England.

He was with the first unit to plunge through the Siegfried line into Germany, and his unit was also one of the first to enter Belgium. He had been sent to France early in July, had entered combat in August, reached Germany about middle of September and with two of his men was credited with capturing 17 Germans and their equipment on 22 September.
