Pfc Eugene G. McKnight attended high school for one year and was a chauffeur before he enlisted at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California on 6 June 1944.

He was reported seriously wounded in action and evacuated to a hospital on 8 January 1945. At that time L Company was holding positions in the vicinity of Tadler, Luxembourg.
His brother Glen died in 1943 in an aircraft accident near Alamegordo Army Air Base in New Mexico.
